Typhoons Vs Foresight

Kick off - 3:30pm

History will be made at the People’s Stadium on Gulangyu Saturday 14th August, when for the first time ever a Taiwanese rugby club will make the shortest possible crossing to play in mainland China, as Xiamen Typhoons RFC battle with Tainan Foresight RFC for The Straits Cup.

Xiamen Typhoons RFC is Xiamen’s only rugby team. The Typhoons were formed in January 2009, and consist of over twenty different nationalities, including a growing number of Chinese players. Tainan Foresight RFC were formed in 2010 by the Foresight Company of Tainan.

The People’s Stadium on Gulangyu was founded in 1898, and has been recognised by the Chinese Football Association as the earliest documented football pitch in China. In May 2009, the stadium again made history by hosting the first ever rugby match in Fujian province. And on 14th August, it will make history yet again, when it hosts the first ever Straits Cup. This will be the third time that The People's Stadium will have hosted rugby this year after a match against Chengdu Pandas in January and the ever popular Gulangyu 10s in May.

As with all Xiamen Typhoons rugby matches, the emphasis is on friendship and camaraderie. Rugby culture is about battling hard on the pitch, but is equally about forming great friendships with the opposition after the match. So once again the People’s Stadium will take on a party atmosphere on 14th August, with beer flowing, barbeques grilling, and music playing. Come down and join in the fun, while supporting your local rugby club in the battle for the first ever Club Rugby Straits Cup against Foresight Tainan RFC.
